**CANCELLED** Visit the Currier Art Museum and the Zimmerman House. Stroll through the different galleries to see American and European art ranging from the Renaissance to current day. Learn about the museum’s origins in the Currier History Gallery and enjoy the Currier’s extensive collections of paintings, sculpture, furniture, glass, and ceramics throughout the museum. We'll then head off for a private tour of the Zimmerman House. The Zimmerman House was designed by the acclaimed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950. Wright designed the house, the interiors, all the furniture, the gardens, and even the mailbox. In 1979 the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. and Mrs. Zimmerman left the property to the Currier in 1988. In 1990 the house and grounds were opened so that visitors could enjoy glimpses of a private world from the 1950s and 1960s, including the Zimmermans’ personal collection of modern art, pottery, and sculpture. Many people believe that the Zimmerman House is a total work of art. It is the only Wright-designed building in New England that is open to the public. Due to the intimate nature of this home and its setting in a residential neighborhood, access to the house and its grounds are available by guided tour only. Children under the age of 7 are not permitted. Cost: $25 includes admission to both venues *This event has been cancelled due to lack of interest and you can no longer register for it*
***SOLD OUT*** Easy to Moderate Hikes on Audubon Society and Nature Conservancy Trails. We'll start with an easy 3.8 mile hike on mostly flat trails from the Audubon Society (some rocks and minor ups and downs) to Lake Massabesic. Travel through the woods and along the lake shore to rocky vantage points, and visit an osprey blind. Nice rocks for lunch spot. After lunch, we'll travel across town to the Nature Conservancy's Cedar Swamp Preserve. The 602-acre Manchester Cedar Swamp Preserve (the largest conservation land tract in the state) contains 42 acres of globally rare Atlantic white cedar-giant rhododendron swamp, one of the largest and most ecologically valuable cedar swamps in the state. Atlantic white cedar is sometimes found in association with black gum, which is another long-lived tree species that occurs in the Manchester Cedar Swamp wetlands. Some of these trees are over 450 years old. The entire trail system is 1.8 miles long and is lush and gorgeous - complete with 4'-high ferns and underground streams - but if the group prefers a shorter option, the loop to the cedars themselves is just over 0.5 mile. Note that the Nature Conservancy trail is rocky with some roots. The terrain could be considered moderate in spots, but being one of the most beautiful hikes we scouted, it is highly recommended. We can take it slow for those who need extra time. Included. *This hike is at capacity and you can no longer register for it.* Moderate Hike on Mount Major. Invigorating 4-mile hike with 1150' foot elevation change. The trail travels up through a boulder field and down along a stream. The Boulder Loop Trail includes many large boulders and granite rock formations along the inclines to the summit. The payoff is a breathtaking view of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains. Bring hiking boots, sunscreen, bug spray, lunch and plenty of water. Included.
*CANCELLED* Moderately Strenuous Hike on Belknap Mountain. Hike 4.4 miles along a stream and well-marked, wooded trails to fire tower with 360 degree views of the White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee, and Vermont on a clear day. Elevation gain, 1300'. Bring hiking boots, sunscreen, bug spray, lunch and plenty of water. Included. *This event has been cancelled and you can no longer register for it*
*CANCELLED* Strenuous Hike on Belknap and Gunstock Mountains. While moderate hikers will climb Belknap and return the way they came, those wishing a tougher challenge will continue along the Belknap Ridge, descending to a col and then climbing to nearby Gunstock Mountain, home to a ski area. From there we will begin descending, winding through old-growth forest to the valley floor, where another trail will take us back to the parking area, past scenic wetlands and pleasant woods. This more difficult route will allow us less time on top and a faster pace, in order to get back to the bus. Total hike length is approximately 6 miles and 1700' elevation gain. Bring hiking boots, sunscreen, bug spray, lunch and plenty of water. Included. *This event has been cancelled and you can no longer register for it*
***SOLD OUT*** Strenuous Hike on the Welch-Dickey Trail in the White Mountains. This is a 4.5-mile loop hike across the summits of Welch and Dickey Mountains, providing many views along the way as the trail winds its way across open ledges. Elevation gain is 1650'. The climb is generally easy with a few steep stretches. Trails are well marked with yellow blazes on the trees and on the exposed granite, along with occasional cairns. The leg leading to Welch Mountain includes climbing up several ledges and a couple of tight squeezes between slabs; the trail segment to Dickey Mountain is easier. Views from the ledges and summit look south and east over Waterville Valley and north to Dickey Mountain. The half-mile to the Dickey Mountain summit involves a winding trail off Welch, then an easy trail through some pines and onto the open granite of Dickey. Dickey Mountain is the higher of the two peaks. Included. *This hike is at capacity and you can no longer register for it.*
