Travel through the woods and along the lake shore to rocky vantage points, and visit an osprey blind. Nice rocks for lunch spot. After lunch, we'll travel across town to the Nature Conservancy's Cedar Swamp Preserve. The 602-acre Manchester Cedar Swamp Preserve (the largest conservation land tract in the state) contains 42 acres of globally rare Atlantic white cedar-giant rhododendron swamp, one of the largest and most ecologically valuable cedar swamps in the state.  Atlantic white cedar is sometimes found in association with black gum, which is another long-lived tree species that occurs in the Manchester Cedar Swamp wetlands.  Some of these trees are over 450 years old. The entire trail system is 1.8 miles long and is lush and gorgeous - complete with 4'-high ferns and underground streams - but if the group prefers a shorter option, the loop to the cedars themselves is just over 0.5 mile. Note that the Nature Conservancy trail is rocky with some roots. The terrain could be considered moderate in spots, but being one of the most beautiful hikes we scouted, it is highly recommended. From there we will begin descending, winding through old-growth forest to the valley floor, where another trail will take us back to the parking area, past scenic wetlands and pleasant woods. This more difficult route will allow us less time on top and a faster pace, in order to get back to the bus. Total hike length is approximately 6 miles and 1700' elevation gain. Bring hiking boots, sunscreen, bug spray, lunch and plenty of water. Included. *This event has been cancelled and you can no longer register for it*

Elevation gain is 1650'. The climb is generally easy with a few steep stretches. Trails are well marked with yellow blazes on the trees and on the exposed granite, along with occasional cairns. The leg leading to Welch Mountain includes climbing up several ledges and a couple of tight squeezes between slabs; the trail segment to Dickey Mountain is easier. Views from the ledges and summit look south and east over Waterville Valley and north to Dickey Mountain. The half-mile to the Dickey Mountain summit involves a winding trail off Welch, then an easy trail through some pines and onto the open granite of Dickey.
